Developmental psychology and canine behavior research agree on something most people assume is backwards: neither children nor dogs come with a built-in fear of snakes. Both default to curiosity — which is exactly why deliberate avoidance training exists.
A common assumption is that fear of snakes is instinctive — that children and dogs alike "just know" to stay away. The research says otherwise. Developmental psychology shows infants and toddlers detect snakes unusually fast but display no fear until it's learned from a caregiver. Canine behavior studies show a parallel pattern: dogs investigate rattlesnake scent with interest rather than avoidance, and real-world bite data shows most dogs are struck on the head — while approaching, not fleeing. If avoidance isn't innate, it has to be taught.
"He'll just know to stay away" is the single most common — and most dangerous — assumption dog owners make about rattlesnakes. It's an understandable assumption. Evolution supposedly hard-wires animals to avoid things that can kill them, so surely a dog (or a child) would sense danger from a coiled, rattling snake without ever being taught.
The research doesn't support it. Across two very different fields — developmental psychology in children, and behavioral science in dogs — the same pattern shows up: heightened attention to snakes, but no built-in fear response. Both kids and dogs notice snakes quickly. Neither is born afraid of them.
The clearest work here comes from developmental psychologist Vanessa LoBue, whose research with infants and toddlers has repeatedly separated two things people usually lump together: detecting a snake, and fearing one.
In controlled visual-search and video studies, infants as young as 7–14 months old locate snakes faster than flowers, frogs, or other neutral stimuli (LoBue & DeLoache, 2008). This attentional bias shows up before a child could have learned to fear snakes specifically — it looks evolved.
Despite noticing snakes quickly, infants shown snake videos displayed no crying and no distress — no actual fear response (LoBue et al., 2010). Fear only appeared once a snake was paired with a caregiver's fearful reaction. Kids learn what to be afraid of; they don't start out afraid.
This is sometimes called "prepared learning" (Öhman & Mineka): humans aren't born fearing snakes, but we're born primed to learn that fear unusually fast compared to other things. It's a small but important distinction — and it means the fear a child eventually develops depends entirely on what they're taught, by whom, and how.
The same pattern holds for dogs — and here it isn't just observed behavior, it's measurable in the lab and confirmed by real emergency-room data.
In a controlled study, 171 dogs were presented with bedding carrying the scent of a rattlesnake, a harmless rosy boa, a mouse, and a snail. Dogs sniffed the rattlesnake scent more than the boa or the snail — the opposite of what avoidance would predict (Mulholland, Olivas & Caine, 2018).
Researchers checked for right-nostril preference while sniffing — an established marker of negative emotional arousal in dogs. None was found toward rattlesnake odor, suggesting genuine interest without fear (Mulholland, Olivas & Caine, 2018).
In a real-world review of 272 rattlesnake envenomation cases treated at Arizona emergency vet clinics, 87% of dogs were bitten on the head — consistent with a dog putting its face toward the snake, not fleeing from it (Witsil, Wells, Woods & Rao, 2015).
None of this means every dog charges straight at a rattlesnake. Individual temperament, breed, and past experience all matter — some dogs are naturally more cautious around novel or startling stimuli, and a dog that's been startled by a rattle once may show wariness on its own. But the research above describes the default, not the exception: absent any prior lesson, most dogs meet a rattlesnake with curiosity, not caution — and a meaningful number, especially dogs with strong prey drive, will actively investigate or chase.
This is the belief that leads owners to skip training entirely — and it's the same belief the bite-location data directly contradicts. A dog that "just knew" wouldn't be struck on the face 87% of the time.
Just as a child's fear of snakes is shaped by what a caregiver teaches, a dog's avoidance response has to be deliberately conditioned — built through structured, repeated exposure across scent, sound, and sight, not assumed.
This is precisely the gap rattlesnake avoidance training fills. It isn't reinforcing an instinct dogs already have — it's installing one they don't start out with, before a real encounter forces the lesson the hard way.
Children and dogs share more than we usually give them credit for when it comes to snakes: both notice them readily, and neither is born afraid of them. For kids, that fear (or lack of it) is shaped by what caregivers model. For dogs, it has to be built through deliberate, structured training — because left to their own instincts, most dogs meet a rattlesnake with curiosity, and some will go straight after it.
That's not a flaw in the dog. It's simply how the science says they're wired — and it's exactly why professional avoidance training exists.
